Ho sempre amato i platform e, non avendo avuto (se non per pochissimo tempo) una console Nintendo, non ho potuto giocare titoli godibili di questo genere, negli ultimi anni.
Volgarr il Vichingo si è aggiunto, inaspettato, alla mia libreria, grazie all’iniziativa di Microsoft “Games with Gold” e così, senza accorgermente, mi sono trovato invischiato nelle sabbie mobili della frustrazione, a causa di questa esperienza.

Il gioco si basa su dei meccanismi facilissimi, come lascia anche intuire la grafica piuttosto 8-bittosa: ogni stage è lineare, occorre arrivare dal punto A al punto B, dove troveremo un boss, avendo a disposizione solo un checkpoint posto a metà livello (tranne che per il capitolo finale); i tasti sono soltanto tre: uno per saltare, uno per tirare una lancia e l’altro per menar fendenti con la spada.
Gli unici power up che proteggono il fragile Volgarr sono posti in alcuni scrigni e sono composti da parti di equipaggiamento: uno scudo di legno o di metallo, un elmo ed una spada fiammeggiante.

Volgarr il Vichingo è tutto qui.
“Semplice“, direte voi.
“Col cazzo“, vi risponderò io.

La distanza tra i checkpoint mi ha costretto (come testimoniano i sei video girati mentre bestemmiavo) a ricominciare, ogni santa volta, il livello, poiché alcune zone sono estremamente difficili da passare, in quanto – cercando di non fare spoiler – occorrerà calcolare i tempi di alcuni avvenimenti per riuscire a saltare incolumi tra una piattaforma e l’altra; il gioco è quindi, come accennato all’inizio dell’articolo, estremamente frustrante perché trovarsi a morire prima di affondare l’ultimo colpo sul boss, equivale a ripartire da metà livello, dovendo quindi ripetere parecchia strada (con risultati spesso snervanti).

È per questo che l’esperienza è irripetibile: di certo, sono rimasto molto soddisfatto di aver finito Volgarr il Vichingo, ma la rabbia provata durante le varie ore di gioco, non ripaga la gioia di veder sbloccato l’obiettivo finale!
